8. Formative Energies in some Common Foods

We generally take for granted the wonderful gift of our food plants, that bring together the elements and energies from the sun and air, water and earth to nourish us. The vegetable plants that we grow and eat were developed from wild plants long ago. The early gardeners used their perception of the energies in the plants and developed techniques to enhance particular energies so that larger roots or leaves or fruits were developed. Plant breeders have selected for particular traits over hundreds of years since then, developing many different varieties, but the basic types of vegetable remain the same.

In this chapter we consider how the forms of some common vegetable and other food plants could indicate their nutritional value. I have drawn on the detailed observations of plant families and the forms of healing herbs described by Wilhelm Pelikan in his book, Healing Plants (1997) and by Eugen Kolisko in his lectures on nutrition (1978). Although we do not generally look for healing from our food in the same way as herbs are used in healing, it could be helpful to eat particular types of food to help maintain health.

Pelikan’s and Kolisko’s descriptions show that the way two or more types of formative energy interact with each other; how they combine together or oppose each other in a plant, determines their effect when eaten or used as a medicine. Many of the healing herbs show particularly dominating effects of one type of energy, which makes them useful in healing a particular disease condition. Generally, for nutrition, a balanced interplay of energies in the plant food is desirable. Such balance and harmony are sought when interpreting the formative energy effects in the crystallisation pictures referred to in Chapter 7.

I find that when I think about the vegetable or other food I am eating and about how it grows, I appreciate and enjoy it more. As I observe more and respect the food plants and the energies that enable them to grow I feel that they seem to nourish me more. Many of us have lost that connection with our food plants and the land they grow in, which may have more influence on our nutrition than we realise.
